At the beginning the musicians didn't know the notes, they couldn't read nor write a music score. They learnt the tunes and played them "by ear" ; we called them the "routiniers". These men played for their family, their neighbours and for any event such as communal or religious festivities, threshings, etc...

The "routiniers" all had another job better remunerated because music wasn't sufficient. They were craftsmen, farmworkers or farmers which gave them a special place in the village community.
